Intraoral Scanning

Intraoral scanners use structured light or confocal microscopy to capture a three-dimensional digital model of the teeth and soft tissues. Modern scanners achieve accuracy levels of 10–20 microns — far exceeding the accuracy of conventional impressions. The resulting STL file can be used for prosthetic design, surgical guide fabrication, and treatment planning.

CBCT Integration

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides three-dimensional imaging of the bone, teeth, nerves, and sinuses. When merged with intraoral scan data, CBCT creates a comprehensive digital model of the patient's anatomy. This merged dataset is the foundation of implant treatment planning, allowing the surgeon to evaluate bone volume, identify anatomical structures, and plan implant positions with precision.

Digital Smile Design

Digital smile design (DSD) is a protocol that uses facial photographs and digital design software to plan the aesthetic outcome of a case before treatment begins. The patient's facial proportions, lip dynamics, and smile line are analyzed, and a proposed tooth design is created. This design can be previewed by the patient, modified based on feedback, and used as the blueprint for the final restoration.

Virtual Treatment Planning

Virtual treatment planning software integrates CBCT data, intraoral scans, and DSD proposals into a unified planning environment. The surgeon can place virtual implants in the optimal positions, the restorative doctor can evaluate the prosthetic design, and the laboratory can assess fabrication requirements — all within the same digital model, before any treatment is performed.

3D Printing

Additive manufacturing — commonly called 3D printing — is used in dental workflows to produce surgical guides, diagnostic models, and provisional restorations. Surgical guides are printed from the virtual treatment plan and used intraoperatively to ensure that implants are placed in the exact positions specified by the plan. Provisional restorations can be printed and delivered on the day of surgery.

CAD/CAM Manufacturing

Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) is used to produce final restorations from high-strength materials including zirconia, lithium disilicate, and PEEK. CAD/CAM milling achieves tolerances of 10–20 microns, producing restorations that fit with a precision that hand-crafted techniques cannot reliably replicate. For full-arch restorations, CAD/CAM manufacturing is the only approach that consistently delivers the accuracy required for long-term success.
